Griendtsveen ...
... was founded in 1885, by Eduard and Jozef van de Griendt .
They purchased 410 hectares of bog land from the municipality
of Horst, and built a peat factory alongside the railway line.
There was a great demand for peat, especially peat
fertiliser, at the end of the nineteenth century.
Some tens of thousands of workers lived in and around Griendtsveen.
The Peel’s peat found its way to Amsterdam, Paris, and even New York.
