... The Historical Windmill in Sanssouci Park ...
... In 1737, eight years before Sanssouci Palace
was built,
Frederick William I gave the miller
Johann Wilhelm
Grävenitz permission to build
an adjustable windmill
on the Bornstedt Ridge.
In 1787-1791 Frederick Wiliam II commissioned his
court carpenter Cornelius van der Bosch, to build
a Dutch windmill with a gallery level to replace
the adjustable structure that had become badly
dilapidated. The operation of the mill ceased
completely in 1858 and the windmill was declared
a monument in 1861.
The windmill was almost completely destroyed
in 1945,
during the final days of World War II.
It was reconstructed from 1983-1993.
Within its stone tower the Dutch windmill presents
exhibitions on the trade and history of windmills.
The actual grain mill, run by wind power,
is located on the upper floor
